Celebrating Logan's Steps

Logan CWK
Team Logan joins us each year at Cincinnati Walks for Kids to celebrate the strides that Logan has taken since he was a baby.

What does a mom do when her son reaches milestones that once seemed out of reach? She tells everyone, she celebrates—and she walks

Team Logan is back for their seventh Cincinnati Walks for Kids. And while this year’s event is virtual, that isn’t taking the excitement out of Shea’s celebration. She started her walk team in honor of her son, Logan, who experienced blood clots, seizures and strokes when he was just three weeks old.

At first, Shea wasn’t sure Logan would survive, but when he became medically stable, his family started to wonder what his life would be like. Would he truly thrive?

Thanks to our experts in neurosurgery, neurology, ENT, therapy, ophthalmology and the Perlman Center, 7-year-old Logan is exceeding all expectations. He knows his ABCs, numbers, and he can read. Even though he’s not talking, he and his family have found their own way to communicate, and he’s learning to use an assistive communication device.

And Logan is walking with his family around the neighborhood, with a little help from his walker. It’s one more achievement that Shea and her family celebrate at Cincinnati Walks for Kids.

“Cincinnati Children’s saved him,” Shea says. “And we owe a lot to all of you. Being a part of Cincinnati Walks for Kids is something we look forward to every year. And even though this year is virtual, we’re still just as excited as ever to participate.”

Team Logan has consistently been among the highest fundraisers each year. And that, Shea says, is because she’s not afraid to ask for donations.

“I ask everyone. If I’m going to see my tax or financial planner, my hair stylist—anyone I’m going to be in front of, I just ask them,” she says. “I like to ask people in person whenever possible, because it’s harder for them to say no that way,” she says with a wry smile.

That’s definitely been more difficult now that she and her family are doing most things virtually to keep Logan and the entire family well. But those who have supported her in the past and joined her team have stepped up again this year.

You can join Shea and the many other moms, dads, siblings, grandparents, care providers and friends who want to celebrate their kids and say thanks for the work we do each and every day by signing up or donating to Cincinnati Walks for Kids.

And everyone who registers this year will receive a free ticket to visit the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden any time from May 16-29 (reservations required).
